YouTube will never give you your viewers' data. How do you build your own list?

The short answer

YouTube, Instagram and Facebook show you how many people watched, never who they were. To reach your viewers yourself, you have to offer them something worth giving their name and number for, such as a guide, a checklist or a free class. Once they are on your own list, you follow up on WhatsApp or email, sort them by what they need, and reach them without waiting for an algorithm.

Ask permission when they join, tell them what you will send, and make it easy to leave. A list built that way is the most valuable thing a channel can own.

A channel gets a hundred thousand views in a month. The creator can see the number, the countries and the age groups. What the creator cannot see is a single name. If YouTube changes what it shows tomorrow, those hundred thousand people are gone, and there is no way to call even one of them.

That is the deal every creator and every business on social media has signed without reading it. The platform owns the audience. You rent it, one video at a time.

Why won't YouTube give me my viewers' details?

Because the viewers are what the platform sells. YouTube, Instagram and Facebook earn from people staying on them and watching ads. If they handed every creator a list of names, those creators could take their viewers somewhere else. So you get numbers, charts and averages, and never the people.

The platforms want two things: viewers who never leave, and creators who keep making videos to keep them there. If you only want views, that works. If you use video to sell something, a course, a product, a service, an admission, you need something the platform will not give you: a way to reach the person yourself.

What is a video conversion engine?

It is the name I use for the path from a stranger watching a video to a person on your own list who later buys. Four steps:

  1. The videos find your people. Each video is made for one kind of viewer, so the people who watch to the end are the people you can actually help.
  2. You offer something worth giving details for. A guide, a checklist, a free class, a shortlist. It has to solve a real problem on its own.
  3. They join your list. A simple page asks for a name and a WhatsApp number or an email, with clear permission.
  4. You follow up in private. Useful messages, sorted by what each person needs, until the ones who are ready ask how to work with you.

I spent years in data, analytics and business transformation for companies like Amazon UK, American Express and HSBC before I built Peepoye. Every one of those businesses knew its customers by name. Most creators do not know one. This engine fixes that.

What should I offer in exchange for a name and number?

Something your viewer wants right now, that takes them less than ten minutes to use. The best offers come straight from your comments: the question people ask most, answered properly.

  • A shortlist. "The five projects I would actually buy in", "the ten colleges worth visiting", "the three tests to ask your doctor for".
  • A checklist. One page, yes or no questions, that tells them where they stand.
  • A free class. Twenty to forty minutes, live or recorded, that teaches one thing well.
  • A quiz. A few questions that tell them which option suits them.

Put the link in the description, in the pinned comment, and say it out loud in the video, once, near the moment it is most useful.

Where does this work in real life?

  • A real estate adviser. Abhay Rikhi reviews property projects in Gurgaon. His channel has crossed 10,000 subscribers, and his videos offer a free download of his shortlist of projects. Viewers who download it become names he can call, instead of views he cannot reach.
  • A doctor with a paid members' room. Dr Arjun Sabharwal, a kidney doctor with 1.26 lakh subscribers on YouTube, brought the viewers who wanted more into a paid members' room. It had 247 members on 4 September 2026. His case study is here.
  • A doctor who sells without a call. Dr Madhusudan's videos send viewers to his own pages, where people buy without calling the clinic first. The videos reached 19.5 lakh views in five months. Every step is on his case study page.

These results are theirs. Yours will depend on your subject, your viewer and how long you keep going.

WhatsApp or email: which is better for the list?

In India, most people check WhatsApp many times a day and email far less, so we usually ask for a WhatsApp number first. Email is still worth asking for. It is cheaper for long messages and it does not depend on one app. The best answer is both: ask for WhatsApp on the page, and email as an option.

Whichever you use, do not blast the whole list with the same message every day. That is how people leave.

How do I follow up without annoying people?

Every message should bring something new. A short tip, a new video made for their question, a story from someone like them. The ask comes last and stays small.

Then sort people. Someone who downloaded a guide for beginners does not need the same message as someone who attended a free class and asked about price. Even simple groups help: new, interested, ready. Send each group what it needs next. This is what the platforms do with their own users every day. You are simply doing it for yours.

Do I need permission to message people on my list?

Yes. India's data protection law, the DPDP Act of 2023, comes down to two plain habits for most creators: ask permission before you add someone, and let them leave easily. Tell people on the sign up page what you will send them, and include a simple way to stop in every message. Keep the list to yourself. If you are unsure about anything more than that, ask someone who handles these rules for a living.

How many people do I need on a list before it is worth it?

Fewer than you think. A list of a few hundred people who asked to hear from you is worth more than thousands of viewers who forgot you the moment the video ended. Start on your next video. For the bigger picture of how this fits with brand deals, ads and your own offers, read how content creators make money beyond ad revenue, and if you are deciding what to sell to the list, brand deals or your own offer.

Questions people ask about this

Can I see who watched my YouTube videos?

No. YouTube shows numbers, countries, age groups and watch time, but never the names or contact details of viewers. The only way to reach a viewer yourself is to get them to join a list of your own.

What is a lead magnet for a YouTube channel?

A free thing viewers get in exchange for their name and contact details, such as a guide, a checklist, a shortlist or a free class. It works best when it answers the question your viewers ask most in the comments.

Is WhatsApp or email better for building a list in India?

In India, most people check WhatsApp many times a day and email far less, so a WhatsApp number usually comes first. Email is still useful for longer messages and does not depend on one app. Asking for both is best.

Do I need permission to add viewers to my list?

Yes. India's DPDP Act of 2023 asks you to get permission before you collect someone's details and to let them leave easily. Tell people what you will send, and give a simple way to stop in every message.

How do I get YouTube viewers to join my list?

Offer something they want right now that is quick to use. Put the link in the description and the pinned comment, and mention it once in the video at the moment it is most useful. Make the sign up page ask for as little as possible.
